However, before the sugar rush comes the safety precautions that will ensure you have a wonderful and safe night. Here are 4 tips to maximize your candy-collecting time while being safe!

1. Prep Properly

Choose costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure shoes ?t well and costumes are short enough to
avoid tripping. Always carry a flashlight with fresh batteries to light the way for children and escorts.

2. Healthy Halloween

Having a good meal prior to trick-or-treating will discourage youngsters from eating along the trick-or-treat trail. All candy should be inspected. Throw out any candy that appears to have been tampered with or that is not in its original wrapper. Small, hard candy should be removed, as it can be a choking hazard to small children.

3. Treat Distribution

Replace any burned-out outdoor bulbs and remove any obstacles such as garden hoses, toys, bikes or lawn
decorations that could cause a child to trip. Have your treats ready by the door so you don’t need to look for
them when trick-or-treaters arrive. Keep pets away from the front door so they do not jump or bite a
trick-or-treater.

4. On the Trick or Treat Trail

Young children should be accompanied by parents or a responsible adult, while older children going alone
should have a route and a specific time when they should return home. Encourage your children to abide by regular rules of walking around, such as crossing at intersections and designated crosswalks to avoid accidents. Lastly, only visit homes that have a porch light on, as not everyone celebrates Halloween.
